Brief

11th Hour Racing Team appointed Mallory Group in spring 2020 to drive forward an engaging communications strategy that delivers for partners against tangible metrics and inspires behaviour change in people. The team’s principal partner, 11th Hour Racing, establishes strategic partnerships within the sailing and maritime communities to promote collaborative, systemic change benefitting the health of our oceans.

11th Hour Racing Team racing objective three-fold:

  • To win offshore racing, around the world
  • To race with purpose, leaving a positive impact
  • To inspire change, working collaboratively for the health of our oceans

The team will be competing in The Ocean Race 2022-23 - the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world - with a full activation programme right up to the start.

Solution

Mallory Group set out to develop a global communications marketing strategy in the build up to the start of The Ocean Race, aligned with key objectives.

  • Engage audiences worldwide on the journey to win The Ocean Race 2021-22.
  • Create and execute cohesive public awareness campaign focused on ocean health, sustainability and how people can connect with an protect the ocean.
  • Educate fans worldwide and inspire them to change their behaviours and take action to improve the health of the oceans
  • Lead by example with environmental stewardship, implementing sustainable team operations.
  • Serve as billboards and spokespeople for the ocean health movement showcasing the work of 11th Hour Racing’s Grantees and the team’s Legacy Grantees.
  • Advocate for a minimum level of mandated sustainable actions and efforts for each team entered in The Ocean Race building community consensus around these efforts.

Results (to date)

  • Interrogate and rationalise strategy and communications plan: a full audit to determine targets, deliverables and budgets.
  • Creation of campaign evaluation scorecard: identifying KPIs and targets, and process of measurement.
  • Communications management and delivery: proactive PR; sponsor and partner management; senior counsel and management.
  • Communications leadership: designing a framework of operations and overall strategy; leading from the front and keeping one eye on the bigger picture.
  • Campaign evaluation: data gathering and monthly reporting.
  • Distribution of an 80-page report calling for marine-wide action to align with the Paris agreement on climate change.
